![]() ![]() She has no knowledge of archeology, and had her relying on everyone else (including her not so dead father) to help her out. Ok, so use your father's resources to go find him). The film turned her into a spoilt brat (she wouldn't take her father's inheritance, because she doesn't believe he's dead. She was knowledgeable on archeology but refused to accept the myths and supernatural, until of course she found out her father was right all along. The game was all about Lara realising she was a Croft, and that there are things in the world that cannot be given a rational answer. The film's Lara had the same skills in fighting and surviving, but she rarely used it. While she was vulnerable, did fumble she managed to get back up, got stronger and she had the skills to fight back and survive (great lesson here is knowing to be both independent but also learn to rely on others). A fair enough reason, she didn't want to live in her father's shadow or be Daddy's rich girl, she wanted to be taken serious unlike her father's obsession for myths being real. ![]() The game had a young, inexperienced and naïve college graduate Lara refusing her inheritance because she wanted to go her own way instead of taking the resources and money her father left. Lara is meant to independent and confident, which the film failed to portray effectively. Why? Despite Alicia Vikander's best efforts, the film got Lara all wrong. I had a more lengthier review before editing now comparing game to film, but honestly the game is better in every way. Honestly Assassin's Creed was better and that wasn't all that great. Whoever made this film had no idea about any of the games nor Lara, just a quick and blatant cash grab. They practically destroyed the character. If you're one of those who disliked the new games and thought they ruined Lara, then avoid this film. I know there are a lot of reviews praising this film, and I'm happy if you did enjoy it but I didn't. Angelina Jolie's films were much better in my opinion, despite their problems. I think if you don't know the Tomb Raider games new and old (especially the reboots) then you'll probably enjoy this more than I did. Now I'm not expecting this to be identical to the game, but other than crashing and getting stranded on the island Yamatai and with a few references to the game the film went completely off script. While I think Alicia Vikander was good, there wasn't much else I enjoyed from the film.
